Suwa Arana

Building a Sanctuary of Hope: A Digital Platform for Sri Lanka’s First Paediatric Palliative Care Centre

Background & Goal

Suwa Arana (“A Place for Healing”) is Sri Lanka’s first dedicated pediatric palliative care center, built by the Indira Cancer Trust in partnership with various donors, including SLMANA-WR, Lions Club, Roshan Mahanama Trust, and others.

The center is located close to the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama and offers free residential care, lodging, meals, emotional, spiritual, and therapeutic support for children with life-limiting illness and their families. Key facility features include 32 en-suite family rooms, a rooftop garden, a specialized kitchen, recreational spaces, a ground-floor dining hall, etc.

IF Solutions was commissioned to design and develop the official Suwa Arana website (suwaarana.org) to support the center’s goals of awareness, fundraising, volunteer engagement, and community outreach.

Primary objectives for the web project:

  • Raise awareness about pediatric palliative care and Suwa Arana itself.
  • Provide clear means for donors to contribute (e.g., “Donate”, “Sponsor a Day”).
  • Communicate transparency: facility details, donor information, and partners.
  • Create an engaging, compassionate, and accessible user experience (for families, donors, volunteers).
  • Serve as an informational hub: progress updates, news, stories, contact info.

Challenges

  • Emotional sensitivity of content: The subject matter is deeply emotional – care, end-of-life, bereavement. The tone, imagery, and UX had to balance compassion and hope, without overwhelming visitors.
  • Clarity of information & trust: Donors and families need to see evidence of progress, transparency about usage of funds, construction status, and operational plans.
  • Multiple user types & journeys: The site needs to serve donors, family members, volunteers, media, and potential staff. Each has different needs.
  • Visual & emotional design that supports calmness and trust, while projecting professionalism.
  • Performance and accessibility: Given the broad audience, likely visitors from mobile, with lower bandwidth, the site needs to be responsive, fast, and accessible.
  • Security of donation flows: Ensuring donation features are secure, clear, and trustworthy.

Approach

Here is how IF Solutions approached solving those challenges and built the website:

  • Discovery & Stakeholder Workshops
Collected inputs from Indira Cancer Trust, health professionals, designers, and survivors/family members to understand what messages, tone, and stories are most important.
  • UX / Content Strategy
Mapped out user journeys for donors, families, and volunteers. Structured key sections: About, Facility & Services, News & Updates, Donation & Sponsor features, Contact information, Partners & Donors.
  • Design & Visual Identity
Created a compassionate look & feel: soothing color palette, imagery of nature & children, clear typography, visual hierarchy that allows calm navigation.
  • Development
Built on a CMS to allow updating of news, donor listings, and project progress. Implemented donation / “Sponsor A Day” features, a calendar for donation dates, and featured stories. Responsive design for desktop/mobile. Emphasis on performance optimization.
  • Transparency & Social Proof
Sections for principal donors, major donors, images/logos, and contact info. Publish progress updates, news articles.

Accessibility & Usability
Ensured readability, mobile responsiveness, clean navigation, intuitive buttons for donations/contact, and fast load times. Perhaps consider performance under low connectivity conditions.

Design & Development Highlights

  • “Sponsor A Day” Feature – allows donors to easily commit support for a full day of operations. Integrated calendar/booking of dates.
  • Mascot “ELE” launch & merchandise feature, tied into the site, combining awareness + fundraising.
  • Donor & Partner Showcase – showing real partners, major donors, corporate supporters to build credibility.
  • Facility Gallery & Detailed Facility Information – the rooms, rooftop garden, amenities, etc., so that visitors understand the environment and care provided.
  • News / Updates Section – including blog/media coverage, information about funding statuses, open-house, etc.
  • Clear calls-to-action (CTAs) – “Donate”, “Sponsor a Day”, “Join our cause”, making sure conversion paths are visible.

Results & Impact

  • The website has become a key tool in raising awareness of the concept of pediatric palliative care in Sri Lanka. Media coverage and public engagement have increased.
  • It has enabled efficient fundraising, visibility for donors, and transparency, which helps sustain donor confidence.
