Bridging Research and Action: The Digital Hub for Nature-based Solutions and Policy Integration in Sri Lanka.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to establish a central, authoritative platform capable of uniting the diverse stakeholders involved in Nature-based Solutions (NbS)—from academic researchers and government policymakers to local practitioners and environmental activists. The goal was to move NbS from theoretical concepts to scalable national strategies.

Key Challenges included:

  • Fragmentation of Knowledge: NbS research and implementation efforts were scattered across multiple institutions and agencies. There was no single repository to track local successes (e.g., Kurunegala, Kandy, Beira Lake) or share evidence-based best practices.
  • Capacity Building: A platform was needed to facilitate capacity building and knowledge transfer across different sectors, promoting the understanding and implementation of complex, context-specific NbS interventions.
  • Driving Engagement: The network required a dynamic digital home to foster interaction, publicize workshops, and encourage the participation of students, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and nature lovers.

Our Solution

We developed a dedicated Network Portal and knowledge hub structured around the Network for NbS’s five core objectives, ensuring the platform was optimized for both research dissemination and multi-stakeholder engagement.

Strategic Development & Architecture:

  • Action-Oriented Content Structure: Created distinct, clearly labeled sections (Who We Are, Our Work, Resources) to cater to the network’s diverse audience, allowing practitioners to find case studies and researchers to access publications.
  • Dynamic Documentation of Fieldwork: Designed a prominent “Our Works” section to host visual and textual documentation of field activities (e.g., Follow-up Meetings, Workshops, Project Surveys). This provides compelling, transparent evidence of the network’s community and research footprint.
  • Community Building Focus: The “About Us” page was structured to explicitly define the various community segments (Students, Teachers, Practitioners, Policymakers, Nature lovers), validating their contribution and role in the network.
  • Promoting Evidence-Based Action: Integrated a mechanism for sharing and referencing evidence-based research, fulfilling the mission to drive policy and implementation with scientific rigor.

Technical Implementation:

  • Lightweight & Accessible Design: Ensured the platform was easy to navigate and load quickly across various devices, which is essential for remote practitioners accessing field documentation.
  • Scalable Media Management: Implemented a system to effectively organize and tag media (photos and videos) related to multiple projects (e.g., Beira Lake Project) for easy retrieval and public presentation.

Results & Impact

The Network for NbS digital portal successfully established itself as the authoritative national voice for Nature-based Solutions, uniting key actors under a common digital flag.

  • Centralized National Initiative: Successfully created a single, credible platform for all NbS activities in Sri Lanka, significantly reducing knowledge fragmentation across academia and policy circles.
  • Accelerated Knowledge Sharing: The documentation of workshops and project follow-ups created a rapid feedback loop, allowing lessons learned from local projects to be quickly disseminated to the wider national community.
  • Fostered Multi-disciplinary Collaboration: The network identity, amplified by the portal, became a critical neutral ground for researchers, policy-makers, and entrepreneurs to interact, directly supporting the national goal of environmental justice and sustainability.
  • Enhanced Visibility for Community Service: The “Our Works” section provides concrete evidence of the network’s on-the-ground impact, proving its value to funding bodies and attracting new members dedicated to the physical restoration of nature.
